ABC Open has joined with BIFB’11 to encourage young photographers across the state to show their work to an international audience through the festival.
ShutterUp online invites photographers, aged 14 to 24 years, to submit their best photos (maximum 3) to the 2011 Ballarat International Foto Biennale's (BIFB) special events program.
Selected entries to ShutterUp online from all regions in Victoria will be exhibited on level 3 of Central Square Shopping Centre from August 20 to September 18th. Selected entries will also be featured on ABC Local, ABC Open and other ABC websites.
How to Contribute
1.Upload your best photo/s and a short description through the ABC Open Camera Club in flickr.*
2.High schools, youth groups and TAFEs are invited to contact their local ABC Open producer to find out about free workshops which will run in June and July 2011.
* Permission: If you're 17 or younger, you need to get permission from your parent or guardian to take a photo and upload it to the ABC Open Camera Club. The same policy applies if you take a photo of a person under the age of 17. You need to make sure you have their permission as well as their parent's or guardian's permission to upload their photo to the web.
Key Steps
1.Start taking photos
Look for interesting subjects and don't hold back. Think about what you want to take photos of, experiment with light, motion, colour and composition. There's no theme for ShutterUp Online. Be as creative as you can and practice your art of photo taking.
2.Select your best three photos
We want you to select your favourite photographs that best represent you as a young photographer. You can submit one photo, two or three, it’s up to you. Save them to your computer.
3.Resize your photos for the web
Save your digital photos as jpeg format. It should be 2000 pixels across. Aim for between a 2MB to 8MB file size for each photo.
4.Upload your photos to Flickr
To upload your photos you first have to set up an account on the photo sharing website www.flickr.com . For more information on uploading photos through Flickr, please see our factsheet: Getting started with ABC Open's Camera Club – education edition (242KB).
5.Set up a Flickr account
Some schools have blocked the use of Flickr across their websites. We recommend that schools create a single Flickr account that is moderated by a teacher. Students submitting photos to the ABC Open Camera Club in association with a school activity will need to work with the appointed teacher to upload their best photos via the school Flickr account. Alternatively, you can set-up your own Flickr account at home. Go to www.flickr.com and click on the button 'Create Your Account'. Make sure you check your Flickr email account so ABC Open producers contact you.
6.Join the ABC Open Camera Club
Please see our factsheet: Getting started with ABC Open's Camera Club – education edition (242KB) for more details on how to join.
Note: You need to have at least 5 photos in your Flickr account, before any of your selected photos will appear in a public group like the ABC Open Camera Club. These photos don't all have to relate to ShutterUp Online and can be marked as private if you don't want anyone else to see them.
7.Upload your best three photos to Flickr
8.Add a title and description to your photo
Try to be creative and come up with a title that best sums up your photo - it only needs to be a few words. For example, "Beautiful poppies on my kitchen window" gives the viewer information about the subject, the activity and the location of the photo.
Note: If you've uploaded your photos to a school Flickr account, be sure to add your name to the photo at the end of the description. Eg. Photo by (your name here). This way we can contact you through your school if your photo is selected for exhibition.
9.Tagging your photo
Tags are like keywords. They assist ABC Open and people on Flickr to search for photos, by topic. ABC Open has created a special tag for ShutterUp Online. We need you to include this tag to your photo so we can pull your contributions into the ABC Open Camera Club.
Please use the following tags:
Tag 1: abcopen:project=shutterup
Tag 2: your name*
* either your flickr name or your firstname_surname - this will allow people to browse all of your contributions in one go. You can also add some other tags that describe what's in the photograph for example, worker, traveller, local, fruit picker, farmer.
10.Add your photo to your map (geo-tag)
You'll find this function to the right of your photo. However, to ensure your privacy, be careful not to include your home address in the Flickr map. Geotag your city, town, school, or a general location ONLY.
11.License your image
Your photo will automatically be marked as All Rights Reserved - which means you own the image and no one can use it without your permission. By joining the Camera Club, you have given the ABC permission to use your photo throughout the ABC. There are other choices you can make about how to license your image - see Flickr's explanation of Creative Commons for more.
12.Add your photo to the ABC Open Camera Club
Click on the 'Actions' tab above your photo and select 'Add to a group'. It will show you the groups that you belong to and if you have joined the ABC Open Camera Club, that option will appear. Select ABC Open Camera Club and you will see your photo appear in the ABC Open Camera Club Group.
Hurrah! You're done. Thanks for contributing to ShutterUp Online.
NOTE: Submissions to ShutterUp can also be submitted on a disk or memory stick. Please mark these clearly with your name, return mailing address and send them to ‘Shutterup’ PO Box 41, Ballarat, 3353.
